The first at-home COVID-19 test that
offers variant identification

Being able to identify and track COVID-19 variants is an important step in ending the pandemic. And now Cue’s new Variant Identification Sequencing Kit can give you peace of mind — and provide doctors and researchers with the information they need to plan for new mutations and protect the health and well-being of your friends, family, and community.

How do I participate?

Variant Identification Sequencing Kits are an option for those who have already tested positive for COVID-19 with Cue. If that’s you, simply request your kit from the Cue Health App and we’ll send it right to your door. Need to get a COVID-19 test first? Head to our shop.

Molecular testing
by Cue

Like lab-based tests, Cue’s molecular COVID-19 test is a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT), designed to detect the genetic material in SARS-CoV-2. Highly accurate and sensitive, it can detect small amounts of virus, even if you’re not having symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How and when is this feature offered?

Cue’s Variant Identification Sequencing Kit is offered to users who test positive on Cue’s COVID-19 Test for Home and Over the Counter Use. If you receive a positive result, the Cue Health App will automatically invite you to be part of the optional Cue variant identification research program on your test results screen. If you wish to participate, just click on the button to request a sequencing kit within 24 hours after you receive your test result. Participation is entirely voluntary and at no cost to you.

After you receive your variant identification sequencing kit (1 to 2 calendar days after you request the kit), you will need to return the kit with your nasal sample within 4 calendar days of the initial invitation to join the variant identification research program.

What are the benefits of identifying my variant?

The research study may help researchers better understand pandemics and how they evolve so as to improve pandemic readiness now and in the future. Cue’s Variant Identification Sequencing Kit identifies and tracks variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, to help public health professionals and researchers learn about the pandemic and identify locations of outbreaks of variants to help communities, like yours, protect themselves. So, the more people who participate, the more valuable the information is for everyone.

Variant identification is for Research Use Only. Do not use the results from Cue’s Variant Identification Sequencing Kit to make any decisions about your or your child’s health or health care.

Who is conducting the research?

Cue Health Inc., in collaboration with Helix, a leading genomics company, is leading this research program. Cue scientists, other researchers, and public health entities may also use the virus sequences and other anonymous information in current and future studies.

To contribute to public health sequencing efforts and scientific research on SARS-CoV-2, Cue may upload anonymous sequences to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), a leading database on infectious outbreaks and the largest repository of SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data in the world. Researchers, public health entities, and others worldwide use GISAID to study SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses and to better understand how pandemics evolve so that individuals, clinicians, public health officials, and governments can improve pandemic readiness and responsiveness.

Information uploaded to GISAID is de-identified to ensure anonymity. This means that data from the study cannot be traced back to the individual test user.

When will I know my results?

Currently, we expect that you will receive results from the sequencing lab between 14 and 21 days after the lab receives your nasal sample. Your results will be provided in the Cue Health App.

I don’t see an option to request a variant identification sequencing kit.

If you do not see an option to request a Cue Variant Identification Sequencing Kit on your Cue Health App, it is likely that you are not eligible to participate in this research program either because you did not test positive or because your eligibility for the program has expired. You must request a Cue Variant Identification Sequencing Kit within 24 hours of receiving a positive COVID-19 test result to help ensure that your nasal sample will contain enough virus particles to provide useful results.

Additionally, the Cue Variant Identification Sequencing Kit is subject to availability.

What happens to my information?

The safety and privacy of your information are always our priority, and your health information is secure with Cue. The Cue Variant Identification Sequencing Kit is used to analyze anonymous nasal samples from individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 to identify and track variants of the virus for research. Neither Cue nor our research collaborator, Helix, uses your sample to sequence, collect, or track your personal DNA.

Your information is de-identified before being used or shared. This means that information from the study cannot be traced back to the individual test user.

Sequences of the virus may be uploaded to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID). In addition, your results and other de-identified data may be shared with Cue scientists or other researchers for current and future studies. Information from the study may also be presented at scientific meetings and published in medical journals.

What is included in the Variant Identification Sequencing Kit?

Each Sequencing Kit for this research program contains:
  • One Specimen Collection Swab
  • One Barcoded Tube of Transport Media
  • One Biohazard Bag with Absorbent Pad
  • One FedEx Prepaid Return Label

How long does it take for my Sequencing Kit to get delivered?

Your variant identification kit should arrive in 1 or 2 calendar days after you request it in the Cue Health App.

How long do I have to drop off my kit after I’ve sequenced my sample?

You have 4 days from the date the kit is requested to drop off your packaged sample at a nearby Fedex(R) Drop Box. Cue recommends that a friend or family member who is not positive for COVID-19 assist in dropping off your package to a Fedex Drop Box.

Why did I receive an invalid or incomplete result?

An invalid result means that we are unable to obtain a sequence for the sample you provided, and therefore could not identify a variant. An incomplete result means that we were able to obtain only a partial sequence; therefore, the variant identified could be incorrect.

Invalid and incomplete results can occur for several reasons. For example, your sample might not have had enough SARS-CoV-2 virus particles in it because your level of infection was low when you swabbed or because the virus degrades while the sample was shipped to the lab. Problems with the reagents used to store the sample or errors in the sequencing process can also lead to incomplete or invalid results.
